Movable pool floor cost drivers
A movable pool floor has no fixed price, but a predictable make-up. Area, type of mechanism, depth range and the preparation of the pool determine the investment. We base a reliable estimate on your drawings.
Seven cost drivers
A movable floor is always made to measure, and Myrtha itself says the cost is determined “case by case”. That is not an evasion: two pools of the same area can differ widely in drive type, depth range and preparation of the pool shell. We deliberately give no figures here. Below are the choices that shape the price, so you can build a budget and compare quotations.
1. Area and shape. Floor area is the largest factor. A partial floor is smaller than a full one but needs a transition to the fixed section. Irregular shapes need more engineering.
2. Mechanism. Floating, scissor, wall-integrated or suspended: each has its own materials, preparation of the pool shell and maintenance. See How does a movable pool floor work?
3. Depth range and speed. A larger range needs a deeper pool shell and a longer stroke. Speed matters too (ISI: up to 500 mm/min).
4. New or existing pool. In a new pool, recesses and anchors are built in. An existing pool adds a structural survey and adaptations (Myrtha). If the pool is being renovated anyway, for example with RenovAction, the work can be combined.
5. Deck and finish. Perforated polypropylene panels (solid or grated) or polyester tiles, colour, slip-resistance class, and inspection and cleaning hatches.
6. Controls and options. PLC and touchscreen, remote access, depth displays, position sensors to work with a movable bulkhead, recessed steps.
7. Installation and programme. Access to the pool hall, installation time and coordination with the contractor. According to EWAC Medical, a compact EWAC floor is installed within one week and needs a plant room of less than 2 m².
Look beyond the purchase price
A floor is not an isolated cost. Weigh it against what it saves or earns:
- The brief. If one pool with a floor replaces a separate teaching or toddler pool, the investment in building, water and plant changes too.
- Operation. More user groups per hour means more use of the same water.
- Energy. A floor in its highest position reduces the exposed water surface, and with it heat loss and evaporation. Have the saving calculated for your pool, because rules of thumb say little.
- Maintenance and lifespan. Include an annual inspection (Myrtha). For every floor, include maintenance over its life in the comparison; see Maintenance and life-cycle cost.
Comparing quotations: ask about these points
- Which type of mechanism, and does the floor move in an empty pool?
- Speed in mm per minute and load per m², in writing.
- Conformity with EN 13451-11:2022, with a test report.
- What the contractor must prepare (recesses, anchors, ducts, plant room).
- Maintenance interval, who carries it out, and whether divers are needed.
- Warranty periods per component.
- Availability of parts and service in the BeNeLux.
Why one party for pool and floor helps
With a Myrtha pool, the floor, bulkhead and recessed steps are designed together, which avoids extra work at the interfaces between pool builder and floor supplier. EWAC Pools is your contact for the whole package.
Frequently asked questions
What does a movable floor cost per m²?
There is no reliable figure per m², because drive type, depth range and preparation of the pool shell weigh more than area alone. We give an estimate based on your drawings.
Is a partial floor cheaper?
Usually the area is smaller, but the transition to the fixed section and any bulkheads count too. Compare the complete solution.
Is retrofitting more expensive than a new build?
Often, because of the structural survey and adaptations. Combining the work with a planned renovation limits extra work.
What maintenance costs should I expect?
At least an annual inspection of drives, guides and safety devices. Ask suppliers for a maintenance budget over the full lifespan.
Does a movable floor save energy?
A raised floor reduces heat loss and evaporation. The size of the saving depends on the pool and its use and must be calculated per project.
