Movable pool floors for every pool
A movable pool floor sets the water depth to suit the activity at hand, without draining the pool. One pool can then serve lessons, aqua fitness, training and therapy, and become a dry floor at its highest position.
One pool, every depth
A pool that serves as a teaching pool in the morning can host aqua fitness in the afternoon and club training in the evening. The water stays in the pool throughout.
For the operator, that means more programmed hours per square metre of water. For a municipality, it can mean one pool fewer in the brief.
EWAC Pools supplies two product lines. Large floors for public and competition pools come from Myrtha Pools and ISI Pools (Myrtha group). Compact floors for smaller pools and healthcare are built by EWAC itself, under the EWAC Medical name. You have one contact for design, installation and service.
Which movable pool floor suits your pool?
| Large floors (Myrtha / ISI Pools) | Compact floors (EWAC) | |
|---|---|---|
| Use | Public pools, teaching and competition pools, 25 m and 50 m | Therapy, rehabilitation and smaller teaching pools |
| Area | Full pool or part of it (e.g. 50 × 21 m at Aubervilliers) | Suspended up to 45 m², floating from 45 m² (up to about 140 m²) |
| Drive | Floating (submerged tie-rods), mechanical (also moves without water) or integrated in the pool wall | Water-hydraulic: the cylinder runs on mains water, with no oil in the system |
| Control | PLC with touchscreen in a stainless IP56 cabinet, Ethernet remote access, movement log (ISI) | See the EWAC Medical product page |
| Speed | Up to 500 mm per minute (ISI) | See the EWAC Medical product page |
| Deck | Perforated polypropylene panels, solid or grated, anti-slip | Removable polyester tiles on an AISI 316 stainless-steel frame, water-permeable |
Large floors. Myrtha uses three types of mechanism: a floating platform with buoyancy tanks and cables, a scissor mechanism beneath the platform, and screw-jacks set into the pool walls, which keep all mechanics off the pool floor. ISI Pools builds both types permitted by EN 13451-11: a floating floor on submerged tie-rods and a mechanical floor that can also move in an empty pool. ISI designed its first floor in 2015 and shipped floor number 40 in 2019.
Compact floors. EWAC Medical has been designing and building movable floors for over 25 years and has completed more than 1,000 projects worldwide. According to EWAC Medical, the floor has a stainless steel AISI 316 frame with a deck of removable polyester tiles, is water-hydraulically operated with no electrical components in the water, and needs a plant room of less than 2 m². Full details are on the EWAC Medical product page. For healthcare use, see Therapy pool with a movable floor.
How the types of mechanism work is explained in How does a movable pool floor work?
What a movable floor delivers
- More use from one pool. Any depth, several times a day, without draining.
- Safety. A floor raised to deck level closes the pool, so nobody can fall in, and it works as an alternative to a cover (Myrtha). ISI supplies LED displays showing the current depth and a no-diving warning.
- Energy. A closed or raised floor reduces the exposed water surface, and with it heat loss and evaporation (Myrtha, ISI). The saving depends on your pool and programme, so we do not quote a figure without calculating it.
- Accessibility. At deck level a wheelchair rolls onto the floor, which then lowers gently. This method comes from hydrotherapy.
- Water quality. Both product lines are water-permeable, so water keeps circulating beneath the floor. According to EWAC Medical, its floor meets the EN 15288:2008, Annex A dye test.
Partial floors, zones and bulkheads
A floor does not have to cover the whole pool. Myrtha and ISI supply full and partial floors, which can be combined with a movable bulkhead to divide the pool into zones, each with its own depth. The Paris 2024 training pool at Aubervilliers (50 × 21 × 2 m) combines a floor with bulkheads.
Myrtha pools with a movable floor
- De Waterlinie, Culemborg (NL, 2018): a 25 × 21 m Myrtha pool with a full-length floor and a hinged wall that splits the pool into two zones, 2–3 °C apart.
- Centre Aquatique, Aubervilliers (FR, 2024): a 50 × 21 × 2 m pool with a movable floor and bulkheads, built for the Paris Olympic Games.
- Centre Aquatique, La Courneuve (FR, 2024): a 34 × 21 m pool with a floor, bulkheads and starting blocks.
- Son Hugo, Palma de Mallorca (ES, 2021): an 8.5 × 25 m floor that takes the depth to zero, for lessons and other activities.
Standards. Movable floors and bulkheads in public pools fall under EN 13451-11 (current edition 2022). ISI welding is certified to EN ISO 3834-2.
What EWAC Pools does
EWAC Pools has been the authorised Myrtha Pools dealer for the BeNeLux since 14 October 2025. We advise on floor type and dimensions, coordinate recesses and inserts with your architect and contractor, install on site and provide service and maintenance. Myrtha and ISI engineer and manufacture the large floors; the compact floors are built by EWAC itself. For an existing pool, we start with a structural survey, as Myrtha prescribes.
Movable pool floor FAQ
How fast does the depth change?
ISI floors move at up to 500 mm per minute, so moving from lesson depth to training depth takes a few minutes.
Can a movable floor be fitted to an existing pool?
Yes, after a structural survey. Myrtha’s integrated system puts no load on the pool floor and suits both concrete and stainless-steel pools. In a RenovAction renovation, the floor is part of the design.
Which standard applies?
EN 13451-11:2022 sets the additional safety requirements and test methods for movable floors and bulkheads in public pools, read together with EN 13451-1.
How is the floor maintained?
Myrtha recommends an annual check of drives, guides, safety devices and emergency stops. ISI floors have inspection and cleaning hatches. The tiles of the compact EWAC floor can be removed one by one.
Can the floor close the pool?
Yes. Both product lines can be raised to deck level or above, turning the pool into a walkable floor.
What does a movable floor cost?
It depends on the area, the type of mechanism and whether the pool is new or existing. See Movable pool floor cost: what drives it.
