Twentebad, Hengelo: an Olympic-size pool renovated within its existing shell
The Twentebad in Hengelo is the main competition and training venue in the Twente region. In 2018 its 50-metre pool was renovated with Myrtha’s RenovAction technology: a new stainless steel pool built inside the existing concrete shell, instead of demolition and reconstruction.
One pool, many users
The renovated pool serves recreational swimmers, swimming lessons and clubs. A movable bulkhead divides the 50-metre basin into sections, so different groups can use the pool at the same time.
Water circulation designed in detail
The water circulation was redesigned using CFD (computational fluid dynamics). This simulation predicts how water flows through the pool, including speed and temperature, so inlets and outlets can be positioned for even water quality throughout the basin.
Part of a wider sustainability upgrade
The pool renovation was part of a broader upgrade of the facility, which also included a heat pump, solar panels, skylights, an advanced air-handling system and a drum filter.
