De Waterlinie, Culemborg: one pool, two water temperatures

Pool with movable floor, De Waterlinie Culemborg

Swimming pool De Waterlinie in Culemborg opened in January 2018. Its main pool combines two things that normally require two separate basins: different depths and different water temperatures.

A movable floor with a flip-up bulkhead

A movable floor covers the full length of the 25 × 21 m pool, so the depth can be adjusted to the activity. The floor is fitted with a flap: a flip-up bulkhead that physically divides the pool into two thermally separated zones. This allows a temperature difference of 2 to 3 °C between the two areas.

How the warmer zone is heated

To keep one zone warmer, even at shallow depths, the inlet nozzles were repositioned so that warmer water is introduced into that part of the pool.

Ready for competition

For competitions the flap is lowered and the movable floor is set to its lowest position, giving swimmers the full pool without obstruction.

Efficient use of space

Because one pool can host lessons, recreational swimming and training at the same time, the facility needs less floor area than a design with separate pools.
